You've Been Lied To About YouTube (I'm Sorry)

I want to take a moment to tell you that I’m sorry

As much as I hate to say it, you’ve been lied to about YouTube

You were sold the dream that you can make a channel

Get millions of views per video and retire by next year

The truth is that most channels never have even one of their videos reach 1M views

Only 0.33% of all videos that are published on YouTube ever hit this mark

So, does that mean less than 1% of creators will ever make money on the platform?

Here’s the good news

Despite you having been lied to about the notion that virality = income

Making a full-time income on YouTube requires much fewer views than you think

Let me share an example of a fellow personal finance channel: Magnified Money

Magnified Money produces content around financial products and services

Examples include:

  • Credit cards

  • Bank accounts

  • Financial apps etc.

Through the lens of “you need millions of views to make money” you would think that this channel makes next to no money

As you can see, his channel gets around 2-5K views per video

His channel generates roughly 150,000 views per month

Here’s the thing about YouTube…

It’s not how many views you get

It’s about how you use them…

Magnified Money can attest to this…

In his video, “How I Earn $28,000 PER MONTH at 22”, he shared that he was making $12,000 a month just with affiliates…

Not bad considering he’s also monetizing with brand deals, ad revenue etc.

But how you do emulate his results you’re probably wondering…

Making money with affiliate marketing on YouTube comes down to two things:

  1. Identifying an audience aligned offer

  2. Promoting your offer

To succeed with affiliate marketing on YouTube you need to be promoting something your audience will want.

If you are promoting makeup products on a men’s bodybuilding channel, how many people do you think will act on your affiliate links?

My guess is not many…

This means that your affiliate income will be minimal

Now, if you had a makeup channel and were promoting the products you use in your demonstrations, that would be much more aligned to your audience’s interests

But it’s not just enough to have an offer selected

You need to promote it…

The two best practices, which I walk you through how to do in Tube Freedom, are the following:

  1. Add affiliate links in your videos’ descriptions and pinned comments

  2. Mention links in your videos

Here’s a snippet of how Magnified Money promotes his links (video description):

Then the more videos you make with these links embedded

The more traffic they receive

And the more money you make

Takeaway: You can make a full-time income from YouTube with less views than you think but…you need to start to get there

Until next week,

Adam
