Struggling To Get Views On Your Videos?

Here's Why and How To Fix It

Every YouTuber knows that it only takes one video to explode their channel

It’s this fact that keeps us showing up, publishing videos day after day

Some days we think that our time has come

We open up our YouTube Studio and there it is…

1/10

Your best performing video of the last batch

You think to yourself “my time has come!!!”

So a few days later you come back to your video expecting to see it going to the moon

But it hasn’t…

In fact, it’s view line is about as flat as a pancake (which is not a good thing)

What went wrong you think to yourself?

Well today I am going to explain why your promising videos lose steam

Why those channel elevating hope rockets slow down

And how to adapt your content strategy to circumvent them

Let’s dive in…

There are 3 reasons a video flatlines:

1. Audience Alignment
One of the easiest ways to see poor video results is to publish a video that resides outside of the pattern of interest of your core audience.

For example, let’s say that you create Bitcoin analysis videos. Each video you release gets 10,000 views. Then, you decide to make a video on vegan farming (if that’s even a thing). You can expect your core audience to lack interest as this topic falls outside their normal interest pattern (Bitcoin analysis) and the likely result is lower interest and overall less video views. This is the quickest way to flatline your video.

Here’s an example of audience misalignment in action. The channel Business Basics has exploded in the last year by leveraging the ongoing interest in the Ukraine-Russia war. Videos centering around this topic are what many of the channel’s viewers are interested in watching as the high view count will exemplify.

As you can see, when a new, non-aligned topic was introduced (Trouble in India), the view count clearly suffered.

Keeping your content in alignment to your audience’s interest, which I explain more in depth in Tube Freedom is a great way to give your videos higher view potential.

2. Superior Competition

On YouTube, videos are constantly competing against one another like two 12-year old twin brothers.

Amongst competing videos, those with the more favorable metrics are then surfaced to more and more potential viewers while the defeated parties’ videos are de-prioritized for exposure.

For instance, if there are two videos on “how to save money” the one that garners more clicks, engagement, watch time etc. will be pushed more by YouTube as this video is serving the videos intended audience more than all videos of a similar topic.

Why does this happen you may be wondering? Because YouTube wants to maximize watch time on the platform, giving viewers the best viewing experience by surfacing the “best” videos and making YouTube (Google) the most amount of ad revenue in the process.

Therefore, if you have a videos that starts off hot and then dies out, there is a chance that someone else’s video is taking its place in the recommendation system.

3. Tapped Out Demand

If you started a woodcrafted Barbie doll shop in your city, how many Barbies do you think you would sell? 10, 20?

Why so few? Because there simply wouldn’t be that high of demand for the dolls in the first place (My girlfriend just saw the movie so that’s why this topic is top of mind)

If I haven’t lost you then keep this next concept in mind when making videos.

On YouTube, demand plays a role in your views overall potential reach. The more narrow the topic, the less overall viewers your video can be surfaced to.

For instance, a video on PHD level astrophyics is going to have much less market demand than a prank video. It’s for this reason that the former often get a limited amount of views while the latter has the potential to garner millions.

If your videos are getting stuck at a limited amount of views per video, ask yourself if they are too narrow in focus. Perhaps broadening the topic (while still serving your audience) could allow you to attract another adjacent audience and allow your video to be served to more people.

You would also be losing demand due to timing. The demand for a video focused on the 2022 economy or the Bitcoin bull run will diminish over time due to the content being less time relevant. Relevancy is a reason why trending content is doing particularly well on YouTube these days (just see the Business Basics example above).

So how do we fix these 3 issues?

1. Audience Alignment: Find what content on your channel works and produce more of it

2. Superior Competition: Focus on quality over quantity to give your videos the best chance of outperforming competing videos and getting more recommendation opportunities by YouTube

3. Tapped Out Demand: Broaden your video ideas to appeal to a larger audience while still remaining cognizant of the niche you reside in (e.g. Instead of “How to invest in mortgage REITS” try “how to invest in real estate for beginners)

Release content that is evergreen to give your videos lasting view potential (or accept that timely content will naturally fall in viewer interest over time)

Now, after reading this does it mean you’ll never see a video flatline ever again?

Sadly no…

But it should help you give every video you make a better chance of breaking out, getting your channel more exposure and giving you the results you desire

Until next week,

Adam
