Don't be Fred

Meet Fred.

By all standards, Fred is a normal guy

He works a job, has a family and enjoys the occasional vacation 1-2x a year

For the most part, Fred’s life is pretty good

Or at least it was until last year

You see, 2024 wasn’t Fred’s favorite year…

Not only did he get passed over for a promotion at work

But he also had to buy his kid braces to the tune of $10,000

Not ideal…

So to say that he was a little sour at year’s end is an understatement

So like most of us, he resolved to make 2025 his year

His goal for this year: make more money

Pretty worthwhile goal given that eggs are now $5 a carton

And you can’t get out of Costco for less than $250 a trip…

So like many, Fred started his YouTube channel on January 2 (he was nursing a hangover on the 1st)

He got his channel set up with a fancy banner and a nice logo

He got all of his production tools and away he went

First video - 14 views

Second video - 18 views

Third video - 11 views

Fourth video - 8 views

His fifth video? He never got there…

After uploading 4 videos, the pain of spending time and money making videos to only generate 50 total views was too much

He figured that maybe YouTube wasn’t for him and that another business model would suit him better (it won’t)

The sad reality of building anything worthwhile is that it won’t be easy

It’s especially hard to put yourself in a position to win when you don’t even give what you’re working on a chance

At the Tube Academy 2024 wrap up coaching call, I shared a video with all the students of Mr. Beast

In the video he says, “upload 100 videos then you can start to wonder why you’re not getting any views”

Whether it’s YouTube or any other endeavor, you have to stick out the learning curve

But sadly most people jump from one model to another, repeating the same mistake time and again

Never developing enough depth of expertise to actually make things work…

Do not be Fred

Do not hop, skip and jump from one opportunity to another

And do not give up on your resolution this year in the year (or at all for that matter)

Because the only one you hurt when doing so if yourself

Much better to end 2025 with the learnings from a year of effort

Than the regret of giving up and always wondering, “what if?”
