If Your Channel Isn't Growing THIS Is Why
YouTube is a simple game
Get people to click and get people to watch
Do these two things in combination and your channel will start to take off
And you don’t have to take my word for it
I think this point will be more convincing coming from someone with a few more subscribers than I have…
The trouble is that what’s simple isn’t always easy
This is definitely the case with YouTube
The good news is that with the plethora of analytics on YouTube
You can find where you’re going wrong and make the necessary adjustments
At a high level, here is the sequence of events that takes place once a video is released (Credit: VIDIQ on Twitter)
Chances are if your videos aren’t getting promoted by YouTube
And your channel isn’t growing then you’re missing the mark on one of these elements…
In the rest of this email, I’m going to go over each one and how you can identify if an error exists and what to do to fix it!
1. Viewer sees title and thumbnail/ Viewer clicks
If your videos are getting a low amount of clicks then it’s going to be hard to grow
You can see the clickthrough rate of any of your videos via the YouTube Studio dashboard
Here’s what you’ll see for newly released videos:
If your Impressions click-through rate is low then a few issues may be present:
Poor choice of title
Poor choice of thumbnail
Topic selected that’s of low interest to prospective viewers
You can try and fix 1 & 2 with title and thumbnail changes
To fix the topic issue, experiment with a similar video idea
If it flops too then it may not be one your audience and the platform enjoys
2. Opening Seconds Hook The Viewer
The hook is critical to winning the view…
To review a hook’s performance read the retention chart
Focus on the results from the videos first 30 seconds
If you’re losing a lot of your audience in the first 30 seconds focus on adding in interesting tips, previewing a large finale or any of the other retention strategies I share in Tube Freedom
3. Keep Viewers Watching & Attention Held Until End
The goal after getting a viewer onto your video is keeping them interested
A flat retention is great but you can learn more from the peaks and valleys
Here we have two spikes, the latter much more prominent:
In this part of the video I shared the best resources for learning a high income skill
You should be drawing learnings from spikes and dips
They will give you clues as to what to include in future videos and what to discard
Add more similar spike elements, remove dips - iterate and repeat
4. Viewer Is Pitched Another Video
Most people don’t have a plan for the ends of their videos
They simply pitch 100 calls to action at once and call it a day
A better approach is to link your viewer to another relevant video
For instance if you are doing a credit card review
You could pitch your next video as a comparison of X card to Y card
With X card being the one you just informed your viewer about
This drives up session time for the viewer and YouTube loves channels that keep people engaged
This process of chaining videos together is what I call “linking”
It’s an easy way to attempt to turn 1 view into 2
It does take a bit of pre-planning but it’s worth it
If you start to use this strategy and are not sure if it’s working do this…
Open up a video and click on the Engagement tab
Go to the End Screen element click rate statistics
If you’re getting a higher than average click rate then you’re moving in the right direction
Fix the breaks in this video cycle and your channel will get more views
YouTube isn’t easy but with the right tools and strategies it can be an incredibly fruitful endeavor
Until next week,
Adam
